The transfer station currently has a variety of recycling categories which you can participate in. There is little
or no charge for trash or recycling services. As costs continue to climb, though, there may be a need to find alternative
methods of funding. Currently, the expenses are covered by a portion of the property taxes. The key to keeping these costs
down is to reduce the amount of weight that is being placed into the trash hopper - the key is RECYCLING. We urge you to help
keep operating costs down and to do your part in recycling.
The map to the right shows the different areas of the transfer station and
is color-coded with the descriptions to the left. Items accepted are as follows:
- Tin
- HOW: Please rinse tin clean and place in the plastic bins to the left of the trash hopper.
- DO: Recycle tin cans, tin lids from glass jars, aluminum foil, aluminum pie plates, etc.
- Glass
- HOW: Please rinse glass clean, remove lids and rings, and place in the plastic bins to the left of the trash hopper.
- DO: Recycle clear, green, and brown bottles and jars.
- DON'T: Not for window panes, light bulbs, pyrex, and the such.
- Cardboard
- HOW: Corrugated cardboard is double-sided with a zigzag center. Boxes must be clean, dry,
flattened, and put into the roller-bin across from the trash hopper.
- DO: Recycle paper bags and corrugated cardboard here.
- DON'T: Not for other types of boxes such as shoe boxes (they go with mixed paper).
- Mixed Paper
- HOW: Clean and dry and place in the roller bin across from the trash hopper.
- DO: Recycle Shoe boxes, egg cartons, cereal boxes, junk mail, windowed and plain envelopes,
dixie cups, computer paper, paper towel rolls, colored paper, phone book covers, you get the picture
- DON'T: Not for plastic, carbon paper, foil, glitter, or ribbon.
- Newspaper and Magazines
- HOW: Newspapers must be loose (no strings, bags, or ties) and place in roller bin across from the trash hopper.
- DO: Recycle newspapers, magazines, advertisement fliers, phone books (without the cover), etc.
- DON'T: Not for hard cover books, boxes, or mixed paper.
- Plastic
- HOW: Look on the container for the number 2 in the chasing arrows symbol as shown here. Please
rinse clean, remove caps and rings, and place in the dumpster to the left of the trash hopper. Plastic
is sorted with colored in one dumpster, and natural (milk jugs) in another.
- DO: Recycle milk jugs, laundry detergent jugs, 5 gallon pails, fluff containers, some plant pots,
or anything with the number 2 symbol shown here.
- DON'T: Not for plastic bags, oil containers, and the such here.
- Plastic bags
- HOW: Clean and dry plastic grocery bags in the trash can to the left of the trash hopper.
- DO: Recycle grocery bags like Shop 'n Save bags.
- Metals
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items on the metal pile.
- DO: Recycle pots, pans, silverware, metal chairs, bicycles, lawn mowers (gas & oil removed), metal signs, etc.
- Oils $1.00
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items in the designated area.
- DO: Recycle diesel fuel, engine oil, transmission oil, antifreeze, paint (free), etc.
- Batteries
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items in the designated area.
- DO: Recycle car batteries, alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries, watch batteries, etc.
- Hazardous
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items in the appropriate area.
- DO: Recycle mercury switches, thermostats, flourescent bulbs, blood pressure cups, ballasts, etc.
- Oversized Brown Waste
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items on the proper pile.
- DO: Recycle couches, stuffed chairs, mattresses, rugs, etc.
- Wood Pile
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items on the wood pile.
- DO: Please place plain, painted, stained, plywood, 2 x 4, all dimensional wood, etc. here.
Pressure treated wood has it's own pile.
- CDD (Construction / Demolition Debris) Landfill
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items in the appropriate area.
- DO: Use this area for asphalt shingles, tarpaper, roofing felt, bricks, broken concrete, broken wallboard, sheet rock, etc.
- DON'T: Please place the following in the trash hopper, NOT THE CDD PILE: Plastic sheathing, tarps, styrofoam,
water pipe, sewer pipe, rope, hose, insulation, vinyl, or fiber glass
- Brush
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items on the brush pile.
- DO: Recycle brush, trees smaller than six inches in diameter, and yard waste such as plants, flowers,
grass, and leaves.
- DON'T: Not for painted, stained, plywood, pressure treated wood, 2 x 4, etc. This goes onto the wood pile.
- Appliances
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items in the appliance area.
- DO: Recycle stoves, referigerators, etc.
- Tires
- HOW: Make sure to check in with the attendant, then place these items in the appropriate area.
- DO: Recycle your old tires here.
- DON'T: DO NOT BURN TIRES. Burning tires is not only dangerous and environmentally hazardous, but it is also ILLEGAL!
A reminder to those residents that have their garbage picked up by a commercial hauler: if you
separate your recyclables curb side, your hauler is required to keep them separate from the regular
garbage and deliver those items to the facility for recycling. You can have pick up service and still
recycle. If your commercial hauler refuses to recycle, please contact us at the Transfer Station, 832-7850.
