The Waldoboro Recreation Department and the Department’s Advisory Committee announce a full slate of games and activities for children and adults on Waldoboro Day, Saturday, June 21, 2008. The goal is to provide families with fun and challenging activities, with prizes. Children’s games for 12 and younger will begin at 9:00 am and hour prior to the parade and run until noon. In addition to the games, there will also be three contests for Elementary, Middle, and High School aged children.
Scavenger Hunt: open to two-person teams in three age groups: Elementary, Middle and High School. The hunt involves discovering facts about Waldoboro and our national history. The hunt begins at 10:30 at the intersection of Friendship and Main Streets. The first place team wins $20.00.
Sprint Challenges: a series of 50 and 100-yard in 4 age categories (8 and under, 9-12, 13-18, and 18+). Races begin at 11:30 a.m. on Glidden Street near the Waldo Theater Annex. The finish line will be adjacent to the Little Sunshine Market. Winners in each race receive $10.00.
Clam Hod Relay: involves three-person teams racing to fill small hods with beanbag clams after donning appropriate dress for clamming. The relay, which pays tribute to our very valuable clamming industry will occur at the intersection of Main and Friendship/Jefferson Streets begins at 12:45pm. The first place team wins $30.00.
Youth contestants can register for the Scavenger Hunt, Clam Hod Relay and Sprints on sign-up posters at their schools in Waldoboro, at the Library, or on Waldoboro Day at the Medomak Valley Community Foundation Booth at the corner of Jefferson and Main Street.
3rd Annual Waldoboro Day Home Run Derby: open to participants ages 13 and up. Teens (13-17) participate free and adults are asked for a $5.00 donation to help offset the cost of prizes. Registrations open at 11:30am at Philbrook Field and will be accepted on a first come first served basis. The Derby begins at noon. Maximum of 50 participants in four divisions: Male & Female 13-17 & 18+. Batters must provide their own pitchers. Softballs are provided. Batters may use any ASA approved softball bat as long as it does not appear on the ASA banned bat list. Each batter will receive 10 swings. Prizes and bragging rights will be awarded to the winners in each category.
In addition to the activities on Waldoboro Day, the Recreation Department is also sponsoring writing and art contests prior to Waldoboro Day. These contests are open to any student who lives, or goes to school, in Waldoboro.
Writing contest: students may submit a short typed essay on the following topic: "If I were mayor of Waldoboro with a million dollars to spend for the good of the town, I would …" The essay is limited to 600 words. Deliver essays to the Recreation Department, in the Town Office building by 4:30p.m., on Monday June 16, 2008. Prizes will be award in three categories (Elementary, Middle and High School).
Art Contest: the theme is: "Something Special About Living in Waldoboro." This contest is open to children and teens ages 5-18, in any media (drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, etc.). Deliver entries to the Waldoboro Recreation Department, in the Town Office building by 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2008. Prizes will be awarded in three school categories (Elementary, Middle and High School).
Prizewinners for the writing and art contests will be announced at 8:00 p.m. during the Street Dance on Friendship Street. In addition to the cash prizes, the winning art will be on display in the Tidemark Gallery through June 30, 2007. Copies of the winning essays will appear on the Medomak Valley Community Foundation website (www.themvcf.org) through June 30, 2007.
